Improved Containment Working Group The remit of the group is “to focus on improving containment by adopting best-practice to reduce escapes, improve profitability and secure the future and credibility of the industry, whilst minimising adverse environmental impacts and preventing conflict with other interests”.

  9. Scottish Technical Standard Through A Fresh Start - Improved Containment Working Group, the Scottish finfish farming industry has signed up to the development of a statutory engineering standard for Scottish fish-farm equipment (pens, nets and moorings) to minimise escapes.

  12. Scottish Technical Standard The Scottish Standard will apply to freshwater and marine farms and represents a major step forward for the industry that will serve to minimise escapes.

Summary update on ICWG • Development of a statutory engineering standard for Scottish fish-farms • Scotland is also involved in an international standards working group (ISO 234) developing global aquaculture equipment standards • Improved Containment group to commission a desk study on the impact of open pen aquaculture on wild fisheries including frequency, cause and significance of drip escapes. • Development of a nationally recognised containment qualification and up-to-date training courses
