What is Common Core Curriculum? • 43 states have adopted common core curriculum for reading, writing and math • Defines what knowledge and skills are needed at each grade level • Fosters a more equitable learning experience and consistent expectations for students • Standards move from a broad scope to a more narrow scope • Standards are robust, relevant and reflect real-world applications

Visual Arts will focus on: • Art vocabulary • Principles and Elements of Design • Evaluating work • Analyzing work and work of others • Understanding how art history plays a role • How other disciplines and global art connect • Embeds literacy and writing
Instrumental Music North Carolina Essential Standards
Band & Orchestra will look like… Students will be encouraged to think “outside of the box” in new and exciting ways! Some examples: • Doing Tai Chi and breathing exercises as warm-up’s • Creating an online timeline of music history • Performing music from various cultures that align with core curriculum
Students will be assessed… • Individually (written tests, playing tests, presentations, research, reflection) • Ensemble (concert performances, MPA, etc.) • New State-Wide “End of Course” assessment for instrumental music called MSLs (Measures of Student Learning) • TBA for implementation • Will be performance-based and teacher-executed
Dance North Carolina Essential Standards
New Essential Standards… Class Offerings: • 6th Grade: Introduction to Dance • 7th Grade: Dance I • 8th Grade: Dance II Based on Four Strands: • Creation and Performance • Dance Movement Skills • Responding • Connecting

Thematic Units • The units in ELA Common Core are thematic, whereas they used to be a plethora of topics thrown together • In each grade level, there are six units which each last for six weeks • In each unit, students will be exposed to all four strands (Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Language) of the ELA Standards
