  1. JSA Winter Congress 2012 Portland, OR February 3rd-5th

  2. Important Info • Leave Friday, Feb. 3rd after school • Arrive on the evening of Sunday, Feb. 5th • $150 for two nights • Scholarships available • REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 6th • Late fee ($15) will be charged after deadline

  3. How to Register • Enter name and e-mail on spreadsheet at meeting • Create MyJSA account • Indicate high school, and use regular e-mail • Fill out generic registration form (http://www.jsa.org/download/JSAResources/Permission_Slip_Generic.pdf) • Write $150 check to JSA and give it to Mr. Bistritz. • Fill out ISD Field Trip form (get it from Mr. Bistritz) • If not already done, pay $10 dues (If you went to Fall State the dues were included)

  4. What to Bring • Yourself • $30-$40 for food (it will probably be less, but just in case. • Pencil/paper OR laptop • Clothing: Business formal attire, clothes for two nights, and clothes for the dance • Your debating skills!

  5. Convention Events • Day 1: Leave from IHS on bus and arrive Friday night. There are no events, just hang out and meet people from all over the PNW. • Day 2: You will be assigned to a committee, and given bills to debate. Please, please don’t be afraid to speak. If you are introducing a bill, good luck. • Night events: social activities, games, dance, etc • Day 3: You will go to the House or the Senate to debate the bills that survived the committees. Hopefully yours remains. • Go home (your parents need to pick you up from IHS)

  6. Advice • Follow the rules: don’t get sent home • No drugs/alcohol, follow the dress code • DEBATE: The conventions are more fun when you are involved. You can subsequent or ask tough questions • HAVE FUN! It is a weekend away from the pressures of school. • Homework: Try to do your homework during the week before the convention so you don’t stay up late on Sunday night .

  7. What You Should Get Out of This • Learn a little bit about the Congressional process • Learn about some current issues and develop opinions on them • Have a great weekend!
