  2. Hinduism • Hinduism is the world’s oldest religion. • There are about 900 million Hindus; that’s a lot!! • Hinduism is the main religion in India but there are followers all over the world.

  3. HOLIFestivalofColour • Holi is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in spring and involves bonfires, lots of coloured paint and baskets of flowers. • There is a mythical story about Holi and why the Hindu people celebrate it.

  4. The Story of Holi A very long time ago there lived an evil Demon King, who ruled the world. He was cruel and tortured people.

  5. The Demon King was so evil that when he found out that his son, Prahlad, worshiped a special god called Vishnu, he decided to KILL his son!

  6. This is Vishnu; the god that Prahlad prayed to. The Hindu people believed this god could save the world from evil.

  7. The Demon King threw his son Prahlad into a pit of snakes! But…… he didn’t die!

  8. So, he released a herd of elephants to trample on his son But………… he didn’t die!

  9. Each time the Demon King tried to kill his son Prahlad, Vishnu heard Prahlad praying and saved him!

  10. The Demon King’s anger grew with each unsuccessful attempt. He decided to ask his sister, Holika, to kill Prahlad. Holika had magical powers; she could not be harmed by fire.

  11. So, Holika took Prahlad, she brought him into a bonfire and sat him on her lap.

  12. BUT… because Holika was using her powers for something evil, the special god Vishnu destroyed her magical powers and protected Prahlad! Holika died in the flames and Prahlad lived!

  13. Vishnu eventually killed the Demon King and Prahlad became ruler. Vishnu had saved the earth from evil by killing the Demon King and his sister Holika and by saving Prahlad.

  14. Every year, Hindu people remember how good triumphed over evil as they celebrate Holi

  15. They celebrate with baskets of flowers, building and lighting bonfires, burning last year’s rubbish and dancing!
