  2. In this session you will: • Explore ideas for using a Google custom search engine (CSE), including one successful example. • Get an overview of how to create your own CSE.

  3. What is aCustom Search Engine (CSE) • Specialized Search Engine – search select sites • Uses the expertise of the author • Controls the results of a query • Adds a human element into a search engine algorithm

  4. Why Bother Creating aCustom Search Engine (CSE) • Focus search on “good” sites • Find specific information from a list of sites in a subject area • Make a webliographies searchable • Effectively assist others in finding better information

  5. Steps for building a Google CSE • Google Account • Create CSE • Enter formatted URLs or keywords • Use is only you – by accessing your Google Account

  6. 1. Google Account • http://www.google.com/ • Sign In (upper right)…Create an account.

  7. 2. Create CSE • Go to https://www.google.com/cse/all • Click add • Two options: • Enter urls to search. • Enter keywords to search.

  8. Option 1: Enter formatted URLs • No “http://” Add * • www.example.com/* to get everything beginning with www.example.com/ • www.example.com/ only gives that single page.

  9. Option 2: Enter keywords • Google generates a list of websites for those keywords. • Those websites will be put in your cse.

  10. Managing Your CSE • Options • Edit link on the left panel. • Set up -> control panel for the CSE • Change urls, access control etc. • Statistics -> analytics and logs • Business -> can include advertisements and make money.

  11. Access Control • You can access your CSE after logging in your Google account and going to https://www.google.com/cse/all • You can generate a public url for others to access it (they can just search).

  12. Example • Create a CSE for citeseerx. • Try using keywords and direct urls. • You can also make your open source digital library by adding other open repository links such as pubmed, ArXiv.
