Office of International Science and Engineering • Serves as a visible focal point, both inside and outside NSF, • for international science and engineering activities. • Promotes the development of an integrated, Foundation-wide, • international strategy. Staff with regional expertise. • Manages international activities that are innovative, • catalytic and responsive to the broad range of NSF interests.

Office of International Science and Engineering • Promotes global access to unique research sites, facilities, expertise and opportunities for collaboration. • Promotes international experiences for junior researchers - undergraduate students through postdoctoral fellows. • Supports activities in all subjects and priority areas within NSF. International Funding • Cooperative Research Projects via ENG, Discipline Programs, and Interdisciplinary Priority Areas, such as “Human and Social Dynamics” • Workshops and Planning visits • New International “Partnerships” • Postdoctoral Fellowships • Graduate Summer Student Institutes and Pan American Advanced Studies Institutes • International Research Experiences for Students

Science and Engineering Workforce Needs • Prepare scientists and engineers capable of meeting global challenges • Attract more U.S. students to science and engineering fields • Broaden participation in science and engineering fields • 2004: NSF Office of International S&E Restructured its programs in response.

  7. THE CHALLENGE INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY OF U.S. JUNIOR RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS

  8. International Research Fellows • Support for junior researchers outside U.S. for 3-24 months. • Eligibility: US citizens or permanent residents; within three years of Ph.D. • DEADLINE: 2nd Tuesday in October • Re-entry support available. • Contact: Ms. Susan Parris at sparris@nsf.gov

  9. East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students Placement in research labs for approximately 8 weeks. Language Study. Applications submitted directly by the graduate student.   11. International Science and Engineering • Partnerships for International Research and Education (NSF 05-533).For U.S. students and faculty to develop new collaborative models. Provides $500K per year for 5 years. • One deadline:March 10, 2005. Contact Ed Murdy, emurdy@nsf.gov • Developing Global Scientists and Engineers (NSF 04-036) Provides $100K. Models are adaptable: International Research Experiences for Students (IRES). Annual Target Dates: Sept. 15 and Feb. 15. Also offered, Doctoral Dissertation Enhancement Projects.
