National Science Foundation (NSF) • An U.S. federal funding agency: support all scientific disciplines except for medicine sciences • Basic scientific research: process studies • Discovery/curiosity driven: no mission in mind • Community directed: no top-down mandates • Proposal based: peer/community assessments • National Science Board review guidelines: • 1) intellectual merit; • 2) broader impacts. • Cross-agency, cross-country efforts are encouraged to meet national, international, and societal needs.

Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences • Furthers understanding of weather, climate and the solar-terrestrial system by expanding the fundamental knowledge of the composition and dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere and geospace environment • Supports large, complex facilities required for research in the atmospheric and solar-terrestrial sciences

Division of Polar Programs • manages and initiates National Science Foundation funding for basic research and its operational support in the Arctic and the Antarctic. • has two science sections- one for the Arctic and the Antarctic. A third section manages the logistics and support operations including field stations, camps, laboratories, ships, and airplanes.
