  1. Chapter 5

  2. Quiz • 1. What is the general term for kids around 6? • 2. Whose hair never seems to grow? • 3. What does this symbolize? • 4. Why is Ralph so angry about the fire going out? • 5. Why is Jack so excited when Ralph finds him? • 6. Who breaks Piggy’s glasses? • 7. Who shares his piece of meat with Piggy?

  3. Quiz: • 1. What does Ralph realize about his ability to lead? • 2. What does he realize about Piggy’s abilities? • 3. What is the figure that walked around in the jungle? • 4. Where does Percival say the beast comes from? • 5. What does Simon claim the beast is? • 6. Who breaks up the meeting and criticizes Ralph? • 7. What does this boy claim he can do that Ralph cannot? • 8. When the meeting falls apart, what two boys stand beside Ralph? • 9. What is Piggy afraid of if Ralph is no longer chief? • 10. Who do the boys wish would help them at the end of Chapter 5?

  4. “Every path was an improvisation”- Ralph feels that is making things up as he goes along • “The trouble was, if you were chief, you have to be wise.” Ralph realizes he is not smart enough to lead the boys. • He looks to Piggy for guidance • Sweeping reforms in the meeting- fire stays on the mountain, no more using the restroom where we eat and sleep, no more worrying about the beast

  5. Piggy claims • “Life is scientific.” • “There isn’t no fear. Unless, we get frightened of people.” • Questions the littluns on their fear of the beast • Simon admits to be the figure in the forest of the littlun’s dream • Percival, a littlun, attempts to explain the beast and erupts into tears instead. • To quell the commotion, Jack speaks out of turn to Percival • Percival claims the beast comes out of the sea.

  6. The fear of the sea is the fact that it is unexplored • Simon makes the claim that the beast “is only us.” • Ralph meeting breaks down, with talks of ghosts and Jack’s cussing • “that understandable and lawful was slipping away.”

  7. The Breakup • Jack breaks the rules of the conch and the organization of the meeting • Claims Ralph is weak because he cannot hunt • Claims that Ralph being chosen as a leader does not make a difference when he cannot hunt- does not have the physical power to hold the rule • Jack breaks away from the meeting, leaving it in anarchy • Piggy begs Ralph to call them back, “What’s the grownups going to say?” • “If I blow the conch and they don’t come back; then we’ve had it.”

  8. The Fallout • Only Ralph, Piggy, and Simon remain- The leader, the intellectual, the spiritual guide • Ralph feels like giving up his leadership role • Ralph starts fearing ghosts; Piggy claims there are no ghosts because “things make sense.” • Piggy recognizes that Jack hates himself and Ralph • “He can’t hurt you (Ralph), but if you step out of the way, he’d hurt the next thing. And that’s me.”

  9. Ralph’s Revelation • Ralph realizes he is not intelligent enough to lead on his own. • “discovered dirt and decay…disliked perpetually flipping the tangled hair.” • Long, tangled hair is associated with the slide into savagery • “I’ve been alone. By myself I went, thinking what’s what.” • After this statement he gives the group the rules they are to live by. • “You voted me for chief. Now do what I say.” (81)

  10. Dionysian Influence • What is unique about their meeting? (p 90) • Notice how the instinct to disobey and chant has increased. • Difficult to keep the meeting serious

  11. Vs. Jack • “Am I a hunter or am I not?” – masculine dominance ignoring the opinion of the group • Sign of military dominance over governmental process. • “You can’t hunt.” “Why should choosing make any difference?”

  12. The Conch • What is implied by the fact that the conch has faded from pink to white?

  13. Forgetting the Littluns • Page 86. Why do they voluntarily forget the littluns?

  14. THE BEAST • Piggy claims • “Life is scientific.” • “There isn’t no fear. Unless, we get frightened of people.” • “Life is scientific, but we don’t know, do we?” • Simon claims that maybe the beast “is us.” • His oration is ruined by Jack’s vulgarity • Everyone laughs at him for the comment- no one wants to believe they are the source of evil.

  15. The Triumvirate • When the meeting disperses only three are left: • Ralph the symbol of leadership • Piggy the symbol of higher reasoning • Simon the spiritual leader of the group

  16. Adult Life • The three boys discuss how organized, sensible, and peaceful adult life is. • What is the irony here?
