  2. Symbiosis • Means “living together” • Close relationship between different species • 3 main types:

  3. 1) Commensalism “sharing of food” • One organism benefits, without affecting the other (+, 0) • Ex) epiphytes – This orchid lives on tree, It gets more light, but Doesn’t harm tree.

  4. Commensalism – cattle stir up insects for these egrets

  5. 2) Mutualism • Both species benefit (increased reproduction) • Ex) pollination

  6. Mutualism • Ex) Mycorrhizae fungus and plant roots Plant gives fungus carbohydrates. Fungus increases water and nutrient absorption of plant.

  7. Mutualism • Ex) Lichen – a composite organism consisting of a fungus and green algae • Some can fix nitrogen (N2)

  8. See the snowline?

  9. 3) Parasitism • One organism benefits while harming the other organism’s fitness Eastern Phoebe nest with Cowbird Egg inserted

  10. Parasitism • One organism may live inside (endoparasites)or outside (ectoparasites) the other organism ECTO:
