Planned Level 1.5 Processing Updates

This document outlines the planned updates for Level 1.5 processing aimed at enhancing data quality and efficiency. Key updates include anomaly flagging using radiances, improved handling of stray light, and more precise identification of counting data and pointing anomalies. Significant geolocation improvements will utilize axis misalignment information to refine TSOL jitter smoothing. The updates also address handling corrupt data while ensuring minimal impact on science processing. Expected outcomes include reduced data loss, optimized operator effort, and improved calibration stability.

  1. Planned Level 1.5 Processing Updates Martin Bates (RAL) GIST26 4th May 2007

  2. Planned Updates • QF Anomaly: flag using radiances, not conf flag • lose scan rather than whole L15N. • Stray Light Flagging • Identification of Counting Data • Identification of Pointing Anomalies • Geolocation: Use of axis misalignment information/mod to TSOL Jitter smoothing • Handling of corrupt data (NCRs 238,239) • no impact on science processing

  3. Now: Set confidence flag and remove from Ed01 QF Anomaly Future: flag bad scan as invalid, keep rest of product

  4. SL bar in ~ 6 L15N products/night Stray Light Flagging ~11-12 L15N products pulled/night for ~65 days/year • fix “equation of time” bug • new (narrower) time limits (lose less data) • recharacterise Apr Feb Nov Time 00:00 01:00

  5. Dummy (corrupt) data Counting Data Recovery ~ 24 hrs • Identification of Counting Data • just lose affected columns rather than whole L15N • no data to pull – saves on operator effort • no biassing of running averages – saves up to 24 hrs of data (+ lots of operator effort) SW Calibration Central pixels affected by ~ 1 Wm-2sr-1

  6. Identification of Pointing Anomalies SOL_SOE_Delay spikes (mirror events) Satellite_Spin_Period spikes (glitch in data supplied to control mechanism) Sensor swaps SOL reconfiguration

  7. SOL_SOE_Delay • just lose affected columns rather than whole NANRG • no data to pull – saves on operator effort • spikes can affect selection of space pixels and distort calibration

  8. Geolocation • New information on axis misalignments available from EUMETSAT (Oct 06). • implement if testing successful ? • sftp transfer of L0 / TsolJitter in packet • mainly an infrastructure change, but ... • ... change required to way TsolJitter values are smoothed (avoid edge effects) • minimal impact on level 1.5 GEO.

  9. Planned Updates • QF Anomaly: flag using radiances • Stray Light Flagging • Identification of Counting Data • Identification of Pointing Anomalies • Geolocation: Use of axis misalignment information/mod to TSOL Jitter smoothing • Handling of corrupt data (NCRs 238,239)
