  13. Charitable Way vs. Cisco?

  14. What the ED’s said January 2005, Executive Director Focus Group on “What keeps you awake at night regarding technology?” • Volunteers run technology in over half – unstable situation • Training and maintenance are critical and under-funded which results in episodic, not smooth operations • Lack of access to/confidence in mission critical data • General lack of control over processes and procedures

  15. Example: Tech Requirements • What do you FORCE your staff to do? • The hardest thing to make funders understand is you need more than just the computer, you need knowledgable people to run them. • The thing about tech is there is so MUCH to think about…electrical outlets!

  16. Example: Typical Tech Grant • $50K grant for 17 computers and 3 servers three years ago • “Staff didn’t know what to do with them” • No plan for training and maintenance • Need a plan now to replace these computers

  17. Solutions • Know the total cost of ownership • Technology Plan – can save you 10% or more • Scheduled Maintenance - can save 20% or more • Processes and Procedures • Know your security policies

  18. Solutions • Benefits of outsourcing (e.g. budgetable) • Maintenance, support, and training • ASP pricing allows budgeting over long term not a large lump sum, etc. • Database solutions, integration

  19. “Thanks to the Center, I am relieved to have a plan for what I need and a partner that can help me get there cost-effectively. I also know how much it will cost this year and next.” Peggy Dyer Executive Director Rise School  Technology Plan

  20. Scheduled Maintenance “I agreed to be an early adopter of the Center's monthly maintenance program because I appreciate the importance of having regular scheduled maintenance at a budgetable fee to keep my newly donated computers at peak performance.  One of the side benefits is it's a relief to have them tell my staff what they can and can't download to keep us from being vulnerable to spyware and viral attacks.”  Kristianne Hinkamp, Executive Director, Victims Outreach

  21. The Future what leaders should be worried about • What the Internet and email have done to Security & Privacy • Auditors require Business continuity and Disaster Recovery plans • Funders require a technology plan
