  1. YRN for York Child Poverty Research

  2. Who we are and what we are researching Natalie Shin Hannah Christina We are researching child poverty in York!

  3. What you expect to see in York?

  4. The reality… York actually contains some streets that are in the top ten most deprived areas in the UK.

  5. YORK If York had 100 children: 49 would be girls, 51 would be boys. 93 would be white British and 7 would be from ethnic minorities, most probably White European, Asian or Chinese. 1 would speak English as an additional language. Most would grow up in stable households, however, 14 would living in poverty.

  6. How we chose what to research • Based on what we found out we found 3 areas that we wanted to look at: • Aspirations • Apprenticeships • Money

  7. Methods we used to gather the data Questionnaires Focus groups

  8. What we found out about aspirations “ If your Mum is a solicitor and your Dad runs a car company, you will want to achieve more… than someone whose Mum doesn’t want to work and doesn’t have a Dad. ”

  9. What we found out about apprenticeships

  10. What we found out about money management

  11. Our Report We then compiled our findings into a report which will be added to the city of York poverty strategy. If you would like to read our report, you can, it’s at: www.yor-ok.org.uk

  12. Our Recommendations • Young people should be taught about money management-and this needs to be done well. • There should be more information given to young people about what apprenticeships are and the kind of areas of work that you can do them in. • There should be work done on raising aspirations of children and young people in poorer areas.

  13. The Future and beyond... • We have be given the opportunity to access some funding which will mean we can act on our recommendations ourselves.
