  24. Concept of internationalisation:defining the difference • “Internationalization is the process of integrating an international, intercultural and global dimension in • the purposes, functions and delivery of higher education” • (to J. Knight 1994) International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  25. Concept of internationalisation4 different approaches • Process approach • The process approach frames internationalization as a process which integrates an international dimension or perspective into major functions of the institutions. Terms such as infuse, integrate, permeate and incorporate are used to characterize the process. • Activity approach • The activity approach describes internationalization in terms of categories or types of activities such as curriculum development, scholar/student exchange and technical cooperation. International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  32. Why? Research Evaluation of the impact of internationalisation on the higher education curricula (in Flanders) International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  33. Internationalizationindeed has an impact on curricula • For the following competencies it was observed that internationalization has an impacton the competency achieved after the training • The duration / intensity of the international experience is clearly a significant factor in a number of cases • Other input indicators, both related to internationalization and more generic (e.g. gender) seem to be far less significant International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  35. The (intensive/long) international experience most clearly influenced • perseverance, • communicating in other languages • multi-cultural openness • The international dimension of the training, including teaching material in other languages, paying attention to international / virtual subject content etc. has an impact on • developing projects, • carrying out research independently, • synthesizing information, • solving problems, • using the Internet, • making ethical choices, • selecting relevant information • working in an interdisciplinary way International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  38. It is very conspicuous how highly lecturers estimate the role of the teaching they provide in relation to the acquisition of a certain level of competency by students • The quality of the international experience has absolutely no influenceon the stated level of competence, in either a negative or a positive sense. • The international experience has a major impact at the personal level. • A clear distinction can be made between what we call an 'internationalisation experience' and what we might call an 'internationalisation dimension'. 42. I IMPACT Impact of internationalization on the curriculum and education An internationalization experience is • any form of participation in an intensive and/or long (three months or more) internationalization activity within the course of study, which is explicitly experienced as such by the participants and which is often but not necessarily linked to mobility. • Contact with foreign students or lecturers is in any case necessary in order to speak of an internationalization experience. • The duration of this experience has an important part to play in determining its impact on the course of study and the competencies resulting from it. 44. I IMPACT Impact of internationalization on the curriculum and education The internationalization dimension is • consists of those elements that implicitly involve a reference to international, other-language or inter-cultural elements, but are rarely recognized as such. • This is almost never associated with a mobility aspect, but this is not excluded. • The extent to which this dimension is covered in the curriculum and its frequency has an important part to play in determining its impact on the learning process and the competencies resulting from it. 45. “I developed myself both as a person and as a future physical • therapist” • (Asa Olofsson, Sweden) • “I feel that after both modules I become more aware of, that the best • way to help a patient in need is not only seeing him in holistic way, but • also helping in an alliance of different health care professionals to • reach best results for the patient.” • (Olga Jensen, Danmark) Statements of students “ I have learnt a lot, especially from the group-work, which was very educational And inspiring both towards my personal an professional development.” (Katherina Kolembusovà, Czech Republic) International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  46. “Every day I had 1 minute moments. That is the way I called them. • Those were moments somewhere during the day that I started to think • about the things that were happening. Just to be aware of the fantastic • time I was going through. • mostly I looked at the people around me who were busy and I started • to reflect to myself just to realize the value of those moments in a • lifetime. Those moments are for me the melancholy of the moment.” • (Van Wijmeersch Steffen, Belgium) • “The interdisciplinary work was a great challenge. As a nurse I now • know about my future colleagues” • (Alain Roossens, Belgium) • “ Statements of students International Week Tallinn Health Care College

  47. “The lesson about the cultural differences is for me the most important • lesson, because it helps integration, respect, acceptance and • understanding” • (Marta Sans, Spain) • “In my opinion the most important thing I learned was that healthcare • Workers from different countries at the end are the same. We may have • different ideas on which way to choose, but the goal is always the same • – to help. This isknowledge I gained not by reading a book, but by • talking with my fellow students and reflecting. • (..) the process has made the knowledge an integrated part of me.” • (Kristine Karstad, Norway) Statements of students International Week Tallinn Health Care College
