  1. Ch. 13 Gene Technology • Recombinant DNA • Take DNA from 1 organism and cut out desired gene. • Cut a hole in the organism where the gene is to be placed. Plasmid = small chromosome • Combine the 2 pieces of DNA into 1 • This can happen because the genetic code is universal!

  2. Ch. 13 Gene Technology • DNA Testing • DNA samples are run through agarose gels using electricity • Big genes hang out at the top of the gel. • Little genes move quickly through the gel to the bottom.

  3. Ch. 13 Gene Technology • Using a key, a particular gene can be determined if it is present in the DNA by where it ends up on the gel.

  4. DNA testing is used to compare the genes present with other people. The presence of specific genes can determine the paternity of a child, confirm a suspect in a crime, exonerate a wrongfully imprisoned person, or show the relation of one species to another. Ch. 13 Gene Technology

  5. Using the DNA represented on the gel to the left, who is likely to have committed the crime? How do we know this? Ch. 13 Gene Technology

  6. Using the DNA represented in the gel on the left, who is the father of the child? Why? Ch. 13 Gene Technology

  7. Ch. 13 Gene Technology • TASKS! • Discuss how gene technology is useful.
