Palm oil Palm oil comes from the African oil palm. Palm oil has caused deforestation and endangered species like the orangutans to lose their home. In Malaysia and Indonesia, an increasing amount of trees are cut down in order to generate the palm oil used in the production of some breads, chocolates, and shampoos. As a result, the native orangutans are losing their habitat. Countries that have the most palm oil production: Indonesia was the largest producer of palm oil, surpassing Malaysia in 2006, producing more than 20.9 million tonnes.

  2. Nigeria was the third-largest producer, with more than 2.5 million hectares under cultivation. Columbia has 1,000,000 hectares planted with palm. 35% of it is made into biofuel. Malaysia produced 17.7 million tonnes of palm oil on 4,500,000 hectares of land, and was the second largest producer of palm oil, employing more than 570,000 people.Malaysia is the world's second largest exporter of palm oil. About 60% of palm oil exports from Malaysia are shipped to China, the European Union, Pakistan, United States and India. They are mostly made into cooking oil, margarine, specialty fats and oleochemicals. Palm oil cultivation: Palm oil can only be cultivated in tropical rainforests, which is (unluckily) where the orangutans stay Because of deforestation, the number of orangutans dropped from 315,000 to fewer than 50,000
