Health & Labelling • “Palm Oil” is not labelled on ingredients lists • Palm Oil is high in saturated fat • Eating saturated is linked to heart disease
How Come These Bad Things Happen? • Demand for Palm Oil from developed countries • Lack of environmental regulation • Laws and regulations not enforced • Bribery and corruption • Lack of opportunities for economic development
Solutions • Only grow palm oil on already cleared land • Ensure land owners are asked before starting • Pay government and land owners to protect their land and not cut down the forest • Independent sustainable palm oil certification system – Palm Oil Police • Labelling of products • Provide alternative economic and social development opportunities
Where do we Start? • Immediate stop to all deforestation • Community education & labelling • Sign the petition • Write letters to supermarkets, food manufacturers and politicians • Tell your friends and family • Make sure Palm Oil is not used to make biofuels • We need to talk to traditional land owner and small farmers. What are their needs and wants?
