  4. Assistant Referee Involvement Have you ever been in. . . ?

  5. ARs have an obligation to assist effectively without being over-involved • Reaching that fine balance is critical for a successful performance of the Official Team Beyond the Basics

  6. ARs must assist when the . . . • Referee needs or asks for help • Integrity of the Game demands it Beyond the Basics

  7. Game Critical Decisions • Foul Inside vs. Outside the Penalty Area • Carding Players • D.O.G.S.O • Misconducts – Cautions vs. Send-off • Off-the-Ball Incidents • Infraction and/or misconducts not seen by the Referee Assisting the Referee

  8. Player Management @Free Kicks • Trigger Events that may lead to Mass Confrontation • Triangle of control • Visual Request from Referee: What/Where? Assisting the Referee

  9. Referee’s Position is off: • Wrong angle of view • Far from or too close to play • Goal-Line Decisions: • Ball In or Out-of-bounds • Goal/No Goal • Corner/Goal Kick • Referee Decision in his/her quadrant Assisting the Referee

  10. The closer to the AR the incident occurs, the greater the likelihood for her/his involvement. • The higher the temperature of the game, the greater the likelihood for AR involvement.

If the Referee is unaware or did not have a clear view of an incident due to distance, angle or visual obstruction and needs or asks for help, and . . . • If the AR is 100% sure that an infraction or misconduct has been committed, and feels confident about being able to serve justice and protect the integrity of the game, the . . . • . . . AR should feel and must be empowered to GET INVOLVED!!!

  16. If the AR does not get involved when needed, he / she would fail the . . . • Referee (in particular) • Referee Team (as a group) • Game (as a whole) And, most likely, impact negatively the outcome of the Game and the overall performance of the Official Team. Summary 17
