Question 1:The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn How is the theme of a moral education portrayed in the story of Huckleberry Finn?
Answer 1: • Huck is put in the position to travel down the Mississippi with a runaway slave. Many people in society, especially in the South looked down upon him for traveling with a black slave. Huck was forced to either make his own decisions/opinions or base his journey off of what he has been taught by society.
Question 2: To Kill a Mockingbird • 2. What is Scout’s biggest issue with listening to what she has been taught and what is morally right?
Answer 2: • Scout’s father is a lawyer in the South. He defends a black man on trial for committing a crime that he did not do. Scout is a white girl, who is forced to endure all of the harsh things the town around her says about her father. She has to make up her own opinion about whether or not Tom Robinson, a black man, is guilty.
Question 3: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry 3. The Logan family rightly deserves the land and life they have built for themselves; based upon your own moral education, do you think that land should be taken away from them, simply because they are black landowners in the South?
Answer 3: • Personally, the Logans earned everything they have achieved. No Southerner, white or black, should be able to take that away from them simply because blacks should have no rights. Each person should be treated equally, and during this time, the Logans were seen as inferiors and were taken advantage of because they were black and could be controlled.
What is a Theme? • Theme is a broad idea or message that is conveyed throughout a piece of literature • Every piece of literature contains a theme; and along with themes are a plot, characters, setting, and style
What does Recurring mean? • Themes reoccur across literature countless times • Many books have the similar, if not the same universal theme • Themes tie everything together in a work, and bring different pieces in to make a whole
How 3 become 1 • Each book has its own specific plots • However, they all have a common tie; the importance of a moral education • All 3 books show how right and wrong are heavily influenced by society; but the societal answer is not always right
