  1. Memoirs

  2. During this unit, you will be writing TWO memoirs

  3. What is a memoir? • Narrative composed from personal experience. • Usually no more than a “snapshot” or series of snapshots from your life. • A memoir may embellish the "truth" of the events to tell a better story.

  4. Memoir Examples • A Child Called It • The Diary of Anne Frank • Night • Marley and Me • The Last Lecture • Eat, Pray, Love • Angela’s Ashes • Of Beetles and Angels

  5. So, do memoirs always have to be books? • NO!

  6. There’s a story about Hemingway…. • For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.

  7. What emotion does this memoir carry? • What inferences can you make about the person(s) who placed this ad? • Why would someone put this ad in the paper? • Why wouldn’t they just throw the shoes away? • What do you think the story is behind this memoir?

  8. Can you tell your life story in 6 words? • Everyone has a six-word story. What’s yours?

  9. Some 6-word examples: • Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends. • I still make coffee for two. • I’m going through it all again. • Intelligent fear, dumb luck, accidental happiness. • I’ll comply, though not likely conform. • Life only has meaning with pizza. • Failed, cried, but will start again! • I’m afraid my brain has frostbite.

  10. Ms. Zylka’s • Living to learn, learning to live.
