  1. The Original Blame GameText: Gen. 3:11-13; Js. 1:13-17

  2. Intro When people do wrong, to salve their own consciences or to justify themselves, they usually try to blame it on something or someone else • When it comes to sin, have you ever played the • “Blame Game? • Flip Wilson: “The devil made me do it.” (Credited with coining phrase) • Criminal:“I came from a broken home;” or, “Society made me.” • Unbelievers: “Too many hypocrites in organized religion.” • Fallen Christians: “I didn’t have the right examples.” • Common Excuse: “I’m just human.” The Original Blame Game

  3. Intro The original “Blame Game”: Gen. 3:11-12 11. And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12. The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate." Gen. 3:13 13. Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." When we blame others for our faults, we are doing what Adam and Eve did in the Garden! Did it work with God? (Gen. 3:16-19) The Original Blame Game

  4. Intro To avoid temptation, we need to understand where the blame lies in committing sin Js. 1:13-17 13. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. Who’s to blame for our sins? The Original Blame Game

  5. Can’t Blame God For Sin Js. 1:13: God does not tempt us with evil • Our unbelief tries God’s longsuffering – Heb. 3:8-9 • Heb. 3:12-19: Those with unbelief (despite seeing God’s works for 40 years) were unable to enter the land of rest. • Heb. 4: Speaks of the rest awaiting the believer if they remain faithful. • God’s commands test our faith – Heb. 11:17 • Gen. 22:1-18: Abraham’s trust and faith in God were credited to him as righteousness Heb. 11:17 17. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; God can’t be tempted with evil, and He does not tempt us to commit evil! The Original Blame Game

  6. Each Person Is to Blame for Their Own Sin Temptation to sin comes from enticement and lust – Js. 1:14 • “Enticed”: G1185 deleazo (del-eh-ad'-zo) – To bait, to lure, to entrap, allure, entice. Gen. 3:6 6. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. • “Lust”: G1939 epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah) – From G1937; “Denotes strong desire of any kind” (Vine). • Lust in itself is neither evil nor sin. • The word is only used of a good desire in Lk. 22:15 (Jesus; G1937); and Phil. 1:23; I Thess. 2:17 (Paul; G1939), but everywhere else it has a bad sense. • G1937 epithumeo [ep-ee-thoo-meh'-o]: to set the heart upon, lust after, longing [rightfully or otherwise]; strong desire, covet. The Original Blame Game

  7. Each Person Is to Blame for Their Own Sin • God has given a lawful fulfillment for every natural, • fleshly desire • I Cor. 7:2; Heb. 13:4: Fleshly desires are lawfully carried out in marriage. The desire becomes evil when it is directed toward that which is unlawful! Gen. 3:6 6. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. • I Cor. 10:6: Israel craved evil things (KJV: “Lusted”). • “Crave”: G1938 epithumetes [ep-ee-thoo-may-tace'] – From 1937; one who desires, a craver, to lust after. • “Craved”: G1937 epithumeo – strong desire, lust after, covet. The Original Blame Game

  8. Each Person Is to Blame for Their Own Sin When we yield to temptation, sin is produced – Js. 1:15 Gen. 3:6 6. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. • Heb. 4:15: It is not a sin to be tempted. • Heb. 4:15; Mt. 4:1-11: Jesus did not yield to temptation! • I Pet. 2:21-22; I Cor. 10:13: Neither should we! God provides escape, we must find the escape route! The Original Blame Game

  9. Each Person Is to Blame for Their Own Sin Sin brings forth death! (Js. 1:15; Rom. 6:23) Gen. 3:24 24. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. • II Thess. 1:9: The disobedient will pay the penalty of eternal separation! When we sin we cannot play the “blame game” but accept responsibility for our sins! The Original Blame Game

  10. God Is the Source for Good Not Evil Js. 1:16-17 16. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. • One of the good He provides is escape from temptation • (I Cor. 10:13) • Adam and Eve both knew the truth – Gen. 3:2-3, 6 • God never changes – Js. 1:17 • As He provided Adam and Eve with all they needed then, He now provides the ultimate sacrifice for our sins that we might live with Him eternally! • We must accept His good and understand whom to blame for our sin. We must not let our desires entice us away from the good God provides! The Original Blame Game

  11. Conclusion When we sin, we have no one to blame but ourselves Instead of playing the “blame game” for our sins, let us overcome temptation • We know we will give an account to • God for all we do! (II Cor. 5:10) • Adam’s blame of Eve did not work on God! • Eve’s blame of Satan did not work on God! Neither will our playing the blame game work on that Great Day! The original blame game didn’t work, so let us take accountability & seek forgiveness! The Original Blame Game

  12. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
