    1. UNICEF SUPPORT TO SCHOOL WATER AND SANITATION SHEP WORKSHOP SOGAKOPE 18–20 SEPTEMBER 2007Abednego Chigumbu Sanitation and Hygiene Officer

    2. UNICEF PROGRAMMES IN GHANA: 2006-2009 • Agreement signed with govt to implement the following programmes:- • Health and Nutrition Programme • Education Programme • Protection Programme • Advocacy, Communication, Monitoring and Analysis Programme

    3. HEALTH AND NUTRITION PROGRAMME • Has 4 projects, namely • Child Health • PMTCT • Nutrition • WASH

    4. PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION • Programme implementation is through :- • Government Ministries and Agencies • Partner NGOs • Academic institutions • Research institutions • Private institutions

    6. UNICEF SHEP PROGRAMME • Activities agreed with GES-SHEP during annual reviews • Support is at all levels – National, Regional, District, School • School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project • Covers 4 districts in NR and 2 Districts in UER • Northern Region support has now been extended to 9 districts • HIV/AIDS Alert School Project • Targets five Regions –CR, ER, NR, UWR • So far 3 Regions have been covered – ER, UER, UWR • Involves teachers and students in Schools

    7. CHILD-TO-CHILD APPROACH • Identifying a local health issue and understanding it well • Finding out more about the health issue • Discussing what's been found out and planning action • Taking action • Evaluation: discussing results • Discussing how we can be more effective next time and sustain action

    8. SHEP ACTIVITIES • Institutional capacity building at regional and district level • Support for school hygiene promotion • Safe water delivery • Sanitation and hand washing facilities • Printing and distribution of school health and hygiene materials and life skills materials • Baseline study for water sanitation and hygiene facilities

    9. REGIONAL APPROACH • Support to Regional level SHEP • Regional SHEP Committee • Logistics and other resources • Support to district SHEP • District SHEP Committees • Logistics and other resources • Collaboration with other players in school health

    11. HIV/AIDS ALERT SCHOOL PROJECT ACTIVITIES • The Model is implemented on three pillars. • Teacher-led Pillar • Child-led Pillar • School-Community-Directed Pillar

    12. TEACHER-LED PILLAR • Implemented so far in JSS and Primary Schools in ER, UER, UWR • All teachers trained in the integrated HIV and AIDS Curriculum • Teachers teach children using subject areas

    13. CHILD-LED PILLAR • Implemented so far only in JSS Schools in ER, UER, UWR • Youth clubs formed in all the schools with School Health Teacher as patron • Peer education training completed in all schools • School health teachers trained together with children • Pupils organise education sessions among themselves

    14. SCHOOL COMMUNITY PILLAR • Aims at educating SMCs and PTAs during their meetings • External facilitators will provide HIV/AIDS information and services • A manual will be used for community education • Currently manual being reviewed for printing

    15. SUSTAINING AND MOTIVATING INTEREST • National media campaign • Award certification system • Assessment • Supplies • Documentation
