  1. burns

  2. Bodys’ response to burn • Local-redning,warmath,oedema • Cardiovascular-increased vascular permeability • Respiratory-respiratory failure, airway obstruction • Increased metabolic rate • Due to loss of skin intergrety-hypothermia/infections

  3. Mechanism of injury • Thermal • Scald –by hot liquids • Flame • Contact Electrical chemical

  4. Scald burn

  5. Contact burns

  6. Types of burns

  7. Depth of burn Partial thickness burn = involves epidermis Deep partial thickness = involves dermis Full thickness = involves all of skin

  8. Partial thickness burns • superficial burn. • blistering and peeling in a few days. • Maintain hydration orally. • Heals in 3-6 days- no scaring

  9. Deeper partial thickness • Blisters are typical of partial thickness burns. • Blisters provide biologic dressing and comfort. • Once blisters break, red raw surface will be very painful.

  10. Full thickness burn • Yellow, “leathery” or charred • no sensation (nerve endings destroyed) • will need skin grafts.

  11. Estimating surface area Rule of nine

  12. Complications • Infections • Acute renal injury • Respiratory failure-??? • Dehydration • DVT

  13. management • ABC • Monitor vitals/UOP • Fluid replacement- IV • Pain relief • Wound dressing • Nursing care/drugs • nutrition
