  1. AP Rhet Test Recap • Multiple Choice Portion – 1 hour • No penalty • Essays – 2 ¼ hours • Three essays • Page 6 of 5 Steps to a 5 explain the formula for total point calculations

  2. Synthesis Essay • Student must take a position on an issue after reading and synthesizing a number of sources (four to seven on the exam). • Students must cite either directly or indirectly at least three of the given sources. • The issues will be those for which valid arguments can be made on either side. • The goal is to show complex thinking; THEREFORE, • Avoid an adamant tone • Avoid dismissing the “other side.”

  3. Types of sources to Expect • Articles • Graphs and Charts • Pictures • Posters • Advertising • Photographs • Political cartoons • Paintings

  4. Subject of cartoon • Major components of cartoon • What parts are given. • Ex: a group of children getting off school bus, each holding a gun • Verbal clues • Visual Clues • Position of Cartoonist • Primary purpose of cartoon • How details illustrate the primary purpose

  5. Chapter 10 – 5 Steps to 5 • You must be clear, organized, logical, and thoughtful – in 45 minutes (text suggests 55 min.) • For each major point: • Relate each major point to the thesis/claim. • Use specific examples (personal and otherwise). • Use selected sources to support the major point. • Incorporate sources into the development of your point. • Attribution and introduction of cited sources • Transitions • Mix of direct quotations, summary, and paraphrases

  6. Mark the sources as you read. • Label the information “pro” or “con.” • Note “weighty” ideas. • Students do not need to make all sources. • Visuals: Think critically; do not just accept what you see. • What information is given? • What might be missing? • Is the information skewed? • Does it undercut or inform?

  7. Incorporating sources • Sources will be alphabetically labeled. • Source A; Source B, etc. • Students may refer to sources as labeled. (Note examples) • Any citation whether direct or indirect MUST be credited.

  8. Sample Topic Background information: • USPS has delivered comm. for more than two centuries. • 19th century – efficient and reliable comm. across country. • 1790-1860 – 75 to 28,000 post offices • More jobs in postal service and rail service • 20th century – more growth • Large package delivery and airmail • Last ten years – decrease with increase in electronic comm. • Loss of revenue has prompted USPS to consider cutting back on delivery days and other services. • Assignment: • Read the seven sources. Synthesize info from at least three sources and write an essay that argues a clear position on whether the USPS should be restructured to met the needs of a changing world, and if so, how.

  9. Choose one of the sample essays. • Using the AP rubric you received last semester, assign a number score for the essay. (No rubric? Use a letter grade, given your understanding of the value of each.)

  10. Write a journal entry in which you justify your choice. Develop your ideas; do not just list them.
