What is Twitter? “The best way to discover what’s new in your world.” • Twitter defines itself as a new form of communication • An index to my friends’ thoughts and a way to share what’s happening
Company History • Spiritual successor to Blogger.com (2003) and Odeo Podcasting (2006) • Began as communication system from cell phones as Twttr Beta • In October 2006, Obvious Corp. was started and acquired the URLwww.twitter.com • Became its own company in April 2007 Evan Williams - Founder/ ex-CEO
Explosive Growth • March 2007 - South by Southwest Festival was tipping point • Series of new features added • Political use, constant media attention, word of mouth, and small business use increased number of registered users • 29 million registered users in Mid-2009 • Twitter currently has 54 million monthly unique U.S. visitors
Twitter Services • Micro-blogging application • “Social presence notifier” • Users can “Tweet” from almost anywhere using a variety of messaging services • Allows users to adjust their own privacy settings Twitter Update from Reverend Run DMC
Continued Growth • In September 2009, the company was valued at US$1 billion • Venture capitalists injected $155 million into Twitter • Recently rolled out “new twitter” which includes easier linking to more complex media and other features
Twitter’s Business Model? • Aims to reach 1 billion users and earn net earnings of US$1.1 billion • However, still figuring out how to monetize the incredible site traffic: • Business to business services • E-commerce • Advertising How do I make that paper?
Twitter’s Future • Web analytics show twitter’s subscribers to be slowing with a 60% abandonment rate after the first month • Increased functionality with “new twitter” could help provide more services to potential users • Potentially enlist new developers to create applications for its service through an open source philosophy
