What is a LinguaFolio? • It is a standards-based, self-directed formative assessment tool that: • Motivates • Rewards • Documents • Informs • It is a tool that should accompany language learning throughout life and is suitable for documenting language abilities for various uses. Where did the idea come from? • LinguaFolio is based on the European Language Portfolio (ELP), National Foreign Language Standards, ACTFL Performance Guidelines and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and was developed by members of the National Council of State Supervisors For Languages (NCSSFL): http://www.ncssfl.org/links/index.php?linguafolio Teryn B. The Goals of a LinguaFolio • encourages the learning of all languages • emphasizes the value of knowing many languages - plurilingualism and pluriculturalism • contributes to global understanding • promotes autonomous learning and the ability to assess one’s skills • facilitates articulation among language programs (e.g., high school to university, transfer of students within school districts) based on a clear and commonly accepted description of language proficiency • serves as a tool to assess language learning • recognizes and value heritage languages • promotes language learning as a lifelong endeavor Teryn B.   8. 1. Language Passport • An overview of experiences and ability with different languages. It can be updated frequently and records formal qualifications, diplomas and self- assessments. • Includes: • A linguistic profile or summary of language learning and intercultural experiences or language courses, including formal instruction, summer study, academies, camps, travel and/or study abroad, etc. • A self-assessment grid and global scale Teryn B.   11. 2. Language Biography • A record of personal language learning history that helps evaluate learning goals and reflect on language learning and cultural experiences. This includes a series of Self-Assessment Checklists, which are updated annually. • Includes: • Language goals-why you are learning language(s) and which language skills are most important to you • Language history-list of language learning experiences and dates • Significant language learning and intercultural experiences • Current linguistic priorities including self-assessment checklists Teryn B.   18. 3. Dossier • A collection of pieces of work and certificates chosen by the individual to document and illustrate language skills, experiences and achievements. It can be used to demonstrate the individual’s language abilities to others. • Includes: • Samples of written work and projects • Certificates that indicate language skills • Video and/or audio recordings • Reports from tutors Teryn B.
