  2. Why you should do this course… You are interested in huge amounts of data Learning to… • read research papers critically • present them • write reports • ask the right questions, and to answer them Generating new ideas

  3. Course Organization • I will give only 4 lectures • Students will present papers listed on the course website (45 min. presentations) • Each paper will have a “presenter” and an “opponent” • Each student will present a paper and oppose a paper • Each student will write two reports

  4. The instructor’s role • Help presenters read their papers and prepare their talks • Facilitate discussion in the class • Feedback to presenter right after the presentation • Set the final exam paper

  5. Is this course easy or difficult? • You will have to read a lot. • For your presentation, consider yourself lucky if you have to read just the paper. • You will have to learn by yourself. • I don’t cover all the required material. • You will have to think a lot. • Longest paper is 46 pages, shortest is 8 pages. • Extra points for presenting difficult papers.

  6. How is the grading done? • Presentation ~ 20% • Answering questions ~ 15% • Role as opponent ~ 10% • Two written reports ~ 20% • Class participation ~ 10% • Final exam ~ 25% • Open Web/Book test, may last upto 4-5 hrs. Everyone should aim to get an A grade.
