Goal Setting • Process of identifying defined specific objectives • Can be short term or long term • Short term: smaller components assessed frequently (days-months) • Long term: ultimate goal (months-years) • Can be used for anything a person wishes to accomplish • Rehabilitation • Education • Career • Skill Property of CTE Joint Venture

  4. Remember the SMART Acronym! • Goals should be: • Specific • Measurable • Attainable • Realistic • Time-Sensitive!

  5. Turn to a classmate: Tell them when goal setting is used.

  6. An individual can • Achieve more • Increase performance • Increase quality of training • Increase motivation • Increase pride and performance satisfaction • Increase self confidence

  7. Uses of Goal Setting • Decreases anxiety • Increases concentration • Increases self-confidence • Increases performance • Increases happiness associated with performance

  8. Goals should be… • Written down in writing and posted where they can be seen! • Positive- positive reinforcement keeps us motivated • Negative causes focus on failure • Attainable • Long shots are not attainable

  12. How to develop goals • Operational goals- mini goals working to a bigger one • Personal factors should be considered when setting goals • Set performance goals; not outcome goals • Set specific measurable goals • Set goals at right level

  13. Let’s set some goals! • Set 3 short term goals (before the end of the school year to summer) • Set 2 long term goals (by next school year or 2020) • Set 1 ultimate goal (a personal achievement later in life, your career goal, etc) • Make them personal & realistic…& of course attainable! • Discuss how you are going to get there. Can you do that on your current course? • Work ethic, dedication, motivation level, etc • What do you need to change WITHIN REASON to make your ultimate goal attainable? • How would you react if you don’t achieve one of your goals? • How are you going to make sure that you keep yourself on track to be successful?
