  2. Missions • Launched: Jan. 12, 2005 • First space mission to probe beneath the surface of a comet and reveal the secrets of its interior. • Primary Mission: study the interior composition of the comet 9P/Tempel 1 • Secondary Mission: study extrasolar planets and comet Hartley 2

  3. Spacecraft Results • The first processed images revealed existing craters on the comet • Materials including clays, carbonates, sodium, and crystalline silicates were found while studying the impact • The flyby of comet Hartley 2 showed a large number of icy grains in the coma are driven out of the nucleus by the outgassing of carbon dioxide.

  4. Spacecraft Results • The material excavated by the impact contained more dust and less ice • EPOXI observations of comet Hartley 2 shows that the comet's smooth waist was emitting pure water, while the small end was emitting excess carbon dioxide
