The poem • Life By Edith Wharton; “Life, like a marble block, is given to all, A blank, inchoate mass of years and days, Whence one with ardent chisel swift essays Some shape of strength or symmetry to call; One shatters it in bits to mend a wall; One in a craftier hand the chisel lays, And one, to wake the mirth in Lesbia’s gaze, Carves it apace in toys fantastical. But least is he who, with enchanted eyes Filled with high visions of fait shapes to be, Muses which god he shall immortalize In the proud Parian’s perpetuity, til twilight warns him from the punctual skies That the night cometh wherein non.“

  3. Edith Wharton Edith Wharton; (The poet) • 1862–1937 A New York City aristocrat, Edith Wharton wrote poetry and fiction mainly about high society life. Her marriage to a wealthy businessman gave Wharton ample time to devote to writing such well-known novels as The House of Mirth, The Age of Innocence, and Ethan Frome. Chart; Life Edith Wharton This poem is like a life lesson type of poem. 2 8 lines in the 1st stanza & 5 lines in the 2nd stanza I think the poem was organized because the poet wanted to say that she is proud to have the life she does & so should everyone else I think this poem was organized because the poet wanted to reach out & give readers her advice

  6. Figurative meaning: • Life is given to everybody. Your decisions decides where it goes (either good or bad.) what you do, who you hang around chooses what your life is like. Sometimes its hard but regardless its life & sooner or later it will get better just as long as you put yourself back on the right track.

  7. Literal meaning: • The poet is explaining all the obstacles in life. Also how life is one big obstacle itself.
