  4. Common Core Expectations • Over the next few years you will notice some changes to instruction and testing in our school that will directly impact your child or children. It is essential that you know about these changes and what resources are available to help you support your child. • In 2010, Alabama adopted the Common Core State Standards, which are a national set of learning expectations for college and career success that were developed by teachers, parents, school administers, and education experts. • The purpose of adopting the CCSS is not simply to align with other states, but rather to raise the bar in all grades to ensure that our students are receiving a relevant and rigorous education. The adoption of the CCSS means that your child will be better prepared to meet the demands of college and/or the work place in the twenty-first century. Today’s global economy means that our students need to possess academic standards by the twelfth grade to ensure their success in college and/or workforce. For additional information, please go to: • www.pta.org/comon_core_state_standards.asp.

  5. Remind 101 ! Please, Please take the time to sign up for Remind 101. Remind 101 is a quick and easy way for us to send out classroom updates and any important news that you may need. For example, if we have an early out due to inclement weather, I can simply send out one text message to reach all of you at one time. All messages will be sent during the day or early evening hours. I used this last year and all of the parents loved it. To join this FREE service just do the following: Mrs. Humphrey text: @9cd15 to 706-740-4690 Mrs. Russell text: @5465f to 251-259-4725

  6. Behavior Expectations! This year we will be using a strike system during our instruction to keep track of all behavior in class. In your child’s binder you will find a conduct log. On this log, you will find all of the strikes and comments regarding your child’s behavior. A code can be found on the back of the conduct log explaining the reason for the strike given. If your child receives a strike for any reason, please speak with your child about it. We expect all of our students to behave accordingly no matter which classroom he or she may be in. If you have any questions about the conduct log, please call us at 567-4323.

  7. Homework Expectations! Coming to third grade means your child will be expected to be more responsible. This year, your child will receive a planner and a binder. In this binder, you will find a place for your child’s homework, a quarterly spelling list, a conduct log, as well as other information. Please read and sign your child’s conduct log each night and return the entire binder the next day. Also, in your child’s planner, please read and check for the assigned homework. Sign the planner and return it each day to school. Expect homework each night in spelling and most nights in math. Homework in the other subjects will come home as needed. Homework will be checked the following day. If an assignment is missed, your child will receive a consequence that the teacher deems appropriate.

  8. Camp wes! Each year, we attend Camp Chandler for an end of the year field trip. This is a fun filled day where students experience various centers where they learn as well as have fun. This trip is $30..00 for each student and includes a t-shirt, lunch, two snacks, as well as water. Parent volunteers are needed. Parents may attend for $10.00 each.
