  1. What on earth are..Smart Materials?

  2. Today we are aiming to… • Understand what a smart material is • Know about the different types …and what they can do • Explore how we can use them to create much more useful products • Our new vocabulary will be highlighted green!

  3. Go on then, what are they? • Smart materials are modern materials capable of automatically changing their properties when something around them changes. • This could be temperature, light, an electric charge. • Change is seen in the material’s shape, colour, strength, conductivity • Think.. Smart materials try to mimic nature!

  4. USA Ski Team, Turin 2006 Members of the USA and Canadian Ski Teams in this years Winter Olympics wore ‘Smart Suits’ These were made from a type of flexible metal called d3o that hardened up like a protective shield in an impact. (Think.. wet sand under your feet) Sadly, the suits didn’t make them go any faster. However it did mean the USA and Canadian skiers were much better off if they fell over than anyone else!

  5. Other main types of smart material: • Piezoelectric materials - produce electric charge when squashed • Phosphorescent materials – glow in the dark • Thermoresponsive materials – usually metals, change shape as a result of heat or cold • Thermochromic materials – change colour with temperature

  6. Activity time! • Thermochromic pigment is a type of dye used to show a colour change when temperature changes. • Think.. Battery life indicators changing colour! • The clever bit - a thermochromic pigment can become transparent (see through) when heated past 27 degrees C! • You are going to make your own temperature sensitive cups, which you can take home with you!

  7. Now lets get really imaginative.. • Now that you understand how thermochromic pigments work, can you think of some different ways in which we could use them? • Think about items you might find round your house, say in the kitchen.. Let your imagination run wild! • There is a prize for the most ingenious idea…!

  8. Do we now… • Understand what a smart material is? • Know about the different types and what they can do? • Understand how we can use smart materials to make products more useful? Key Vocabulary: Smart Material d3o Piezoelectric Conductivity Phosphorescent Thermoresponsive Thermochromic
