  4. Too Soon a Woman • Too soon a woman by Dorothy M. Johnson is about an eleven year old boy who traveled away from home to the mountains with his father and two little sisters. They were going to where the father thought he had an old uncle who owned a two-bit sawmill. • On the way they met Mary, who ran away from somewhere that she wouldn't tell. The father didn't want her along, but she insisted to go with them and take care of the little girls. On their way, they came to an old, empty cabin. The father said they have to stop because the horse was tired and worn out. They had very little amount of food left. • The father asked Mary to take care of his children so he could go to search for his uncle. He left with one blanket and his rifle. While the father was gone a bear scared the horse away, and Mary risked her life to make sure a mushroom wasn’t poinsion. In the end the father got married to Mary.

  5. The People Could Fly • The People Could Fly was an old folk tale that slaves used to tell to give each other hope that one day freedom would come. In the story Africans knew spells that enable them to fly. But when they were brought to America as slaves, they forgot the magic. All but one old man. When he could tolerate no longer the suffering of his people, he whispered the magic words and, one by one and then in flocks, the slaves rose up and flew to freedom.
