  3. Succumb • V. to give way to superior force; yield: to yield to disease, wounds, old age, etc.; die. • Many would have succumbed to despair, but Penelope remained faithful and optimistic that Odysseus would return.

  5. Blanched • V. To turn white or become pale • Blanched with terror, Odysseus’ crew began to panic as they faced Skylla.
