Chapter: 1 Section #: 1.1 Screen Type p. 2 Navigation Options: Back Forward Exit Print Help Menu Glossary Student Interaction: DMSP Satellite and OLS Sensor DMSP Program The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) is managed at the Space and Missile Systems Center, Vandenburg Air Force Base, California. <Command and Control> is provided by a joint-operational team at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Suitland, Maryland. The DMSP mission is to generate atmospheric, oceanographic and space weather data for operational forces worldwide. The Air Force is the DOD executive agent for this program. The data from this program is furnished to thecivilian community through the Department of Commerce and NOAA. For further information see: http://www.aero.org/dmsp/overview http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/dmsp/dmsp.html 1.1 The DMSP Satellite System. 19. Chapter: Section #: Screen Type Link from graphic Navigation Options: Back Forward Exit Print Help Menu Glossary Student Interaction: DMSP Satellite and SSM/I Sensor Spectral Characteristics The SSM/I sensor is a 7-channel passive radiometer. The SSM/I measures microwave energy in four frequencies, three of which are dual-polarized. Vertical polarization refers to the preferential sensitivity of a channel to vertically-polarized microwave radiation. Horizontal polarization refers to the preferential sensitivity of a channel to horizontally-polarized radiation. The brightness temperature differences between the horizontal and vertical polarizations often give useful information about meteorological and surface phenomena. The following table summarizes basic information about the SSM/I channels. The letter "V" after the frequency stands for vertical polarization; "H" stands for horizontal polarization. Channel Frequency Polarization Spatial Resolution 1 19.35 GHz V 43 x 69 km 2 19.35 GHz H 43 x 69 km 3 22.235 GHz V 40 x 60 km 4 37.0 GHz V 29 x 37 km 5 37.0 GHz H 29 x 37 km 6 85.5 GHZ V 13 x 15 km 7 85.5 GHz H 13 x 15 km 1.15 The Electromagnetic Spectrum Click on the yellow text for more information.

  20. Chapter: 1 Section #: 1.1 Screen Type p. 2 Navigation Options: Forward Exit Print Help Menu Glossary Student Interaction: Geography Review TestCanadian Arctic and Beaufort Sea: Arctic Islands – Question 2 Test your knowledge of water bodies. Try to complete this exercise before 2 minutes elapses on the timer. From the selection of names of bodies of water on the bottom left of the graphic, drag the names to the appropriate placeholder on the map. Amundsen Gulf Baffin Bay Lancaster Sound Queen Maude Gulf Prince Regent Inlet McClure Strait Jones Strait Peel Sound Gulf of Boothia Mclintock Channel Barrow Strait Victoria Strait Mould Bay Franklin Strait Viscount Melville Sound Feedback will appear here. 1.6 Canadian Arctic and Beaufort Sea Note: The visual will be a flash interaction or a drag and drop exercise constructed in Authorware. Before 2 minutes elapses on the timer, the user must drag a label onto placeholders on the map. If the label is dropped onto the correct placeholder, the label will remain in place. If the label is not placed on the correct location, the label will return to its original starting point and the user will be given a hint of the correct response.
