  3. LAND • Lowlands – located north and west • Highlands – located south and east

  4. SPECIAL LANDFORM • Mount Kilimanjaro • “shining mountain” • Highest peak in Africa • Peak has snow all year

  5. VOCABULARY • Plateau • A raised area of relatively level land

  6. AFRICAN PLATEAU • South and east coasts – steep cliffs • East side of plateau – 5,000 ft elevation • West side of plateau – 1,500 ft elevation

  7. GREAT RIFT VALLEY • A series of broad, steep-walled valleys formed by tectonic plates pulling apart • Located between the Red Sea and Mozambique • Eventually, East Africa may become an island!

  8. WATERWAYS • Some valleys have filled with water to form lakes • Lakes and rivers provide fresh water and fish • Nile River – longest • Okavango River – empties north of Kalahari Desert • Zambezi River – has many waterfalls

  9. FOUR CLIMATIC REGIONS • Arid Desert • Semiarid • Tropical • Equatorial

  10. ARID DESERT • Very little rain • High temperatures • Few plants and animals • Sahara, Namib, and Kalahari are examples

  11. SEMIARID (Semi Arid) • High temperatures • More rain than in the desert • Sahel is an example

  12. TROPICAL • Six months – rainy season • Six months – dry season

  13. EQUATORIAL • Two rainy seasons • Two short dry seasons • Located at the Equator • 50-60 inches of rain per year • Many trees • Much wildlife

  14. VOCABULARY • Desertification • The process by which land that can be farmed or lived on is turned into desert

  15. VOCABULARY • Drought • A long period of time without rain Sure could use some rain!

  16. VOCABULARY • Savanna • A flat grassland in a tropical or subtropical region with scattered trees and shrubs

  17. RESOURCES • MINERALS • Gold, diamonds, copper, tin, chrome, nickel, iron ore • VEGETATION • Trees, cocoa beans, cashew nuts, peanuts, vanilla beans, coffee, bananas, rubber, sugar, tea…. • WILDLIFE • Attracts many tourists Will this list ever end?

  18. VOCABULARY • Nonrenewable resource • A resource that cannot be replaced or that can be replaced only over millions of years • Renewable resource • A resource that can be used and replaced over a relatively short period of time
