Separate Colonies • A natural border divided the northern and southern parts of Carolina. • In 1729, North and South Carolina became 2 separate colonies. • The king was worried that the Spanish in Florida might attack South Carolina. • In 1732, the southern part of South Carolina became Georgia.

Becoming a Royal Colony • South Carolinians became unhappy with Lord’s Proprietors. • They were not keeping the colonists safe. • Colonists feared Native American attacks. • Colonists feared attacks from the French and the Spanish. • Colonists wanted to become a royal colony. • A colony ruled by a king. • 1721-Francis Nicholson became the first royal governor of SC making SC a royal colony. • Royal governor is chosen by the king.

  8. Royal Governor Appointed by the King. Oversaw colonial trade. Had final approval on laws. King of England Commons House of Assembly Made local government decisions and passed laws that needed to be approved by the Governor and the King. Royal Council Advised Royal Governor. Early South Carolina Government • Regulators-settlers who wanted to control by rule the upcountry. • They worked because the government in Charles Town couldn’t enforce laws or protect people in the upcountry. • They started misusing their power so the government got involved and they lost their power.

Early South Carolina Government • SC was ruled by a royal governor who had help from a royal council who were all chosen by the king of England. • Local decisions were made by the Commons House of Assembly. • The royal governor and the king could veto (reject) any laws the assembly came up with.

Rice and Growth • Economy- the way products are made and are bought and sold in a country or area. • Export- a good that is produced in one country and shipped to another to be sold. • Rice became an important export for the SC colony. • Immigrant- a person who comes to live in a new country. • Many came to settle in parts of the upcountry. • Largest upcountry settlement was Camden. • As more people came to upcountry, trade became more important.
