FAMOUS BATTLES • Hostilities reached a climax in 1773 when land speculator, Michael Cresap led a group from Fort Fincastle at present day and raided Shawnee towns what became know as Cresaps war • In 1754 hostilities broke out between English and French troops in western Pennsylvania • English troop under a young commander Washington, overwhelmed by the French , which began a lengthy war for control of the American colonies • This influenced Delaware and Shawnee to side with the French

  3. GOVERNMENT • By 1775 Virginia was governed as a Royal Colony • In 1606 the London company and Plymouth company were formed • This enabled Virginia to be able to make money and make laws

  4. HISTORY • Founded in 1607 by John Smith and others at Jamestown • In 1586 the colonists on Roanoke Island are forced to return to England due to hardships • Virginia government allows families to live rent-free for ten years on land owned by the state • In Virginia was made a Royal Colony

  5. RAW MATERIALS • Natural Recourses: -Fish -Forests -good agriculture land • Farming and Plantations were important • Exported agriculture products to other colonies

  6. GEOGRAPHY • MOUNTIANS • VALLEYS • COASTAL PLAIN

  7. RELIGION • Not dominated by a specific religion which gave way to religious freedom for Baptists, Anglicans and others

  8. CLIMATE • Warmest of the colonies • But the hot and humid summers gave rise to the spread of disease • The climate made it possible to grow crops throughout the year and was ideally suited for plantations

  9. ECONOMY • Virginia exported more than 10 million pounds of tobacco to England • Before they were famous for tobacco there were economic disasters, outbreak of diseases, and starvation • In 1605 only 38 out of 105 settlers in Jamestown survived the first winter
