SIMD Review – User Workshop The SIMD Review Why now? • 10 years on from the first edition of SIMD, do we still have the best possible tool for measuring deprivation as it is experienced by people in Scotland today? • welfare reform – changes to the benefits system will affect at least the SIMD Income and Employment domains • datazone boundaries – datazone boundaries are being redrawn to account for population changes (SIMD ranks are calculated for individual datazones) • the next edition of SIMD – SIMD editions are published roughly every 2-3 years Two strands • Conceptualising deprivation • the theoretical definition of deprivation • understanding rural and urban deprivation – same or different things? • the strengths and weaknesses of area-based and individual-based approaches to deprivation • Measuring deprivation • do we have the best domains to capture the most relevant aspects of deprivation? • do we have the best indicators to measure given aspects of deprivation as directly as possible? • are we using the best statistical techniques to create the index? user workshops The purpose of this workshop is to understand … • … what would make SIMD better? • what would you change about SIMD? • how could SIMD be made more useful? • how can we improve the presentation of SIMD? • …what do you use SIMD for? • what needs does SIMD fulfil for your organisation? • how do you use SIMD? • what questions does SIMD help you answer?
