The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) identifies concentrations of multiple deprivation across Scotland, ranking 6,505 data zones on a scale from most to least deprived. The Housing Domain specifically measures the suitability, adequacy, and physical condition of housing. Key indicators include the presence of central heating, overcrowding, and housing quality as per the Decent Homes Standard. Despite its low weighting in 2009, understanding these metrics is crucial for addressing housing issues and improving living conditions in deprived areas.

What is the SIMD? • The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across all of Scotland • Relative measure ranking the 6,505 datazones in Scotland from 1 being most deprived to 6,505 being the least deprived
What should a Housing Domain measure? • suitability of housing ? • inadequacy of housing ? • physical housing condition ?
SIMD 2004, 2006 and 2009 Housing Domain • Persons in households without central heating (2001 Census) • Persons in households that are overcrowded (2001 Census) Housing domain low weighting – only 2% in 2009
Requirements of data sources • A significant count within each data zone (ruling out most survey data e.g. SHCS) • A figure for each data zone which can be ranked 1 to 6,505 e.g. DZ ranked 1 has the highest percentage of ‘bad’ housing • This ranking accurately reflects the standard of housing in each data zone i.e. those in DZ1 are actually the most ‘housing deprived’
Other Administrative Sources • Social Housing Stock Approx 600,000 houses – 100 per DZ • Lettings to Social Houses per year Approx 60,000 lettings – 10 per DZ • LA Housing List Applicants Approx 200,000 applicants – 30 per DZ
