  1. Developing the SIMD Housing DomainJon Hunter and Stuart Law Communities Analytical Services5 October 2010

  2. What is the SIMD? • The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across all of Scotland • Relative measure ranking the 6,505 datazones in Scotland from 1 being most deprived to 6,505 being the least deprived

  3. What should a Housing Domain measure? • suitability of housing ? • inadequacy of housing ? • physical housing condition ?

  4. SIMD 2004, 2006 and 2009 Housing Domain • Persons in households without central heating (2001 Census) • Persons in households that are overcrowded (2001 Census) Housing domain low weighting – only 2% in 2009

  5. Requirements of data sources • A significant count within each data zone (ruling out most survey data e.g. SHCS) • A figure for each data zone which can be ranked 1 to 6,505 e.g. DZ ranked 1 has the highest percentage of ‘bad’ housing • This ranking accurately reflects the standard of housing in each data zone i.e. those in DZ1 are actually the most ‘housing deprived’

  6. Other Administrative Sources • Social Housing Stock Approx 600,000 houses – 100 per DZ • Lettings to Social Houses per year Approx 60,000 lettings – 10 per DZ • LA Housing List Applicants Approx 200,000 applicants – 30 per DZ
