Origins • Wada-Na-Todo-Abhiyan emerged from the interactions of human rights activists and social action groups who were gathered at the World Social Forum 2004 (Mumbai) • WNTA was envisioned as a forceful, focused and concerted effort to make a difference to the fact that one-fourth of the world's poor live in India, and experience intense deprivation from opportunities to learn, live and work in dignity. • WNTA was formed by a core group of 40 organizations in 2004-05, which has today developed into a Campaign Co-ordination Group of 105 organizations from across India www.wadanatodo.net

Objectives & Structure • WNTA aims at the fulfillment of the government’s commitments to end Poverty & Social Exclusion as promised in the MDGs, NDGs & NCMP • Thematic Focus on Livelihood, Health, Education & Social Exclusion • Campaign Actions undertaken through Mass Mobilization, Policy Audits & Advocacy efforts • Governed through a 3 Tier Structure, namely a Campaign Co-ordination Group, Campaign Steering Group & National Secretariat • Promotion of decentralized State level campaigns www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions The People’s Summit Against Poverty(Sep 2005) • 12,000 people come together in one of the largest demonstrations against poverty in recent times • A People’s Charter calling for immediate action to meet the MDG commitments and end poverty released • Political leaders, members of Planning Commission support the initiative • A. R. Rehman leads a People’s Concert against Poverty, along with other musicians like Kailash Kher & Indian Ocean www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions Citizens’ Report on the MDGs (Sep 2005) • Primary data collected from 1514 villages to evaluate status of the MDGs • Focus on Health, Education, Poverty Alleviation and Environmental Sustainability • The Report released as part of the People’s Summit Against Poverty, 2005 www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions 2nd Civil Society Review of the NCMP (May 2006) • More than 250 people across 12 states • Release of a 10 point Charter of Policy Demands, which set the agenda for campaign action • Ele-goat becomes campaign icon! • Review Report & Charter of Demands widely disseminated, including MPs & Prime Minister www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions People’s Actions Against Poverty (Sep-Oct 2006) • Coordinated action across 14 states, with large numbers and range of actors • ‘Stand Up’ action in collaboration with UNMC & GCAP (Oct 15-16) • Actions related to Land, Dalits, Livelihood, Education, Housing also taken • Large scale mobilization & Media coverage in states www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions People’s Actions Against Poverty (Sep-Oct 2006) • Women’s Summit Against Poverty (17 Oct) • 100 women partners of the Abhiyan meet to define their space and agenda within Abhiyan • Women’s Taskforce formed, and expansion of Steering Group to enable 50% women members • Future actions & initiatives of Abhiyan influenced accordingly • ‘Linking Denotified, Nomadic & Semi-nomadic Tribes to the Millennium & National Development Goals (3 Oct) • Organized jointly by the National Commission for DNT-NT-SNT, Lokdhara & Wada Na Todo Abhiyan • First such consultation specific towards mainstreaming issues of DNT-NT-SNT www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions NREGA: Mobilization & Social Audits(Aug 06 - Feb 07) • ‘Rozgar Adhikar Yatras’ and NREGA Tribunals held across 6 states by WNTA & PACS partners • National Tribunal on NREGA held at the India Social Forum, 2006 • More than 50 depositions across 14 states • Outcomes & Verdict taken to MPs through pre-Budget delegations marking 1 year of NREGA www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions Nine is Mine: 9% GDP for H & E(Oct 06 - Feb 07) • 9-Is-Mine Children’s Campaign launched on Oct 16 with 4500 children from across 10 states • Nation wide signature campaign launched on Nov 13 2006 • More than 5000 children come together for culmination on Jan 30 • 200,000 signatures collected in 2 months www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign ActionsPerspective Reports on NCMP(March 2007) • ‘Gender & Governance – Reviewing the Women’s Agenda in the NCMP’released on March 8th • 27 release events on March 8 alone, and 40 release events involving 12,000 people across 10 states across March • 2000 copies across local groups & national women’s networks like NFIW & NAWO www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign ActionsPerspective Reports on NCMP(April 2007) • Review Report on the “Dalit Agenda in the NCMP” released on April 14 – Ambedkar Jayanti • Release at Parliament Street as part of NCDHR-Action 2007 events • Review of key aspects of the NCMP and outline of demands for policy action www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign Actions3rd Civil Society Review of the NCMP(May 2007) • Release of the ‘Review Report on 3 Years of the NCMP’ • More than 400 people from 23 states involved in deliberations held • Media release & wide coverage of a ‘Report Card on the NCMP’ compiled through feedback from 500 organizations across 20 states www.wadanatodo.net

Campaign ActionsMid-point Review of the MDGs(July 2007) • Preparation of an India Checklist on the MDGs • Release of Mid-term Review Reports on the MDGs for 12 states of India on 7 July 2007 • Prime Minister briefed on NCMP Review outcomes & MDG Review activities as part of a delegation led by the National Social Watch Coalition on 4 July 2007 www.wadanatodo.net

Key OutcomesMobilization • Direct Engagement of Excluded Groups – Dalits, Women, Youth, Children, Disability Groups, Denotified & Nomadic Tribes, Minorities • Outreach of more than 3000 groups networked across 23 states • Localized campaigns operational in 13 states • Effective engagement of groups from different sections of society to support the demands of the marginalized, as in the ‘Nine Is Mine’ actions • Collective national-state actions taken across the year, leading to greater impact, reach & visibility www.wadanatodo.net
