  1. DIRECTING & ACTING

  2. DIRECTINGBASICS / LOGISTICS CHECKLIST • Ensure camera rolling / sound recording • Wait for actors • Call “action” • Wait several seconds after scene to call “cut” • Coverage / continuity! – master shot of whole scene, CUs, OTSs, motion, XCUs, etc. More than 1 take on everything. • With non-professional actors: stop them in middle, have them do line over if necessary / pressed for time (“Take it from there.’’) • Encourage improv / “go all out” for your last take

  3. DIRECTINGDirecting Actors • Melodrama • Result-oriented direction vs. specific, playable direction • Adjustments – as if statements • Emotional mapping & a through-line • Experiential directing & using objectives or simple intentions

  4. DIRECTINGRESULT-ORIENTED DIRECTION • Can you make it quirkier? • Can you take it down? / Give it more energy? • Don’t say, “You always do that.” It should be, “You always do that.” • I think (the character) is disappointed. • When she tells you that she doesn’t have the money, you get angry. • When the scene starts he is worried because she is late. He is relieved when she arrives, but then disappointed because she hasn’t got the money, and then becomes suspicious that she might be holding out on him. • This is how I see the character • Can you play him aggressive, but pleasant • He’s a punk. She’s self-destructive, he’s stupid • Let’s give this character a hostile edge
