SATs PRESENTATION 2011/12 For Year 6 Parents By Karen Henderson
Aims of the session: • To ensure that parents are aware of the SATs tests in Maths and Literacy undertaken by Year 6 children next year and Science sampling • To ensure that parents are aware of the help and support available
When: 14th – 18th May 2011 • Timetable: • Monday: Reading Test • Tuesday: Short Writing Test, Spelling Test and longer Writing Test • Wednesday: Mental Maths and Maths Test A (non-calculator) • Thursday: Maths Test B (calculator) • Friday: Science Tests x 2 for selected schools
English SATs • The test consists of a reading comprehension paper, two writing papers (short and long) and a spelling test. • These tests are time limited:- Reading Comprehension – 1 hour Long Writing – 45 minutes Short Writing – 20 minutes Spelling – 20 spellings approximately 10 minutes
Writing • This year writing levels will be judged through teacher assessment alongside the tests. • A sample of pupils results will be nationally verified.
Maths SATs • There are 3 separate tests • These tests are time limited:- Paper A – non-calculator (45 mins) Paper B – calculator (45 mins) Mental Maths (20 questions/20 mins)
Science SATs • Science SATs tests will be undertaken in a sample group of schools in 2012. Those schools will be notified in February next year. • There will be a teacher assessment level reported to parents along with other test results.
SATs Levels • Most children at the end of KS2 should reach Level 4 • A small percentage may achieve level 3 or level 5 • I am available to discuss predictions privately, either tonight or at a mutually convenient time
How can we help your child? • At school: • In the weeks leading up to the tests the children will have revision sessions and the opportunity to have a go at answering questions in the SATs format. • SATs style questions will reinforce learning carried out in class • Extra sessions – these will take place for some children, before or after school, in the Spring term. Not all children need attend them, but they are more than welcome. • Further details next term
How can you help your child? • Use revision guides published by CGP – these are available to see tonight and orders can be placed for next day delivery. Check the website: http://www.cgpbooks.co.uk/pages/ home.asp • Encourage your child to revise using the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/revisewise
How can you help your child (cont) • Make sure you know what homework is set and encourage your child to do it • Encourage your child to read • Find opportunities for your child to use numbers in everyday situations – the weekly shopping/ cooking • Encourage your child to follow up interests and talk about them • Help your child to be ready to learn and not tired • Make sure that your child does not miss any of the tests
What to do if your child is ill during the SATs week. • Inform the school as soon as possible – there is usually someone at school by 7.30am • If your child can manage to come to school it will be possible for a room to be found where they may sit the test on their own, under supervision • If necessary dose the child with a pain relief substance to lower any temperature • Your child may then go home after the test
Help with the tests • In certain circumstances a child may be given a reader in either or both the maths or science tests. • For example: if we feel that the fluency level of a child’s reading may hinder the child finishing the test in the required time limit. • This is done on a one-to-one basis and a member of staff will be available to do this • A reader will not be available for the English tests • Having a reader does not penalise the child in any way and can often be beneficial
Results • During early July the school will send you a report telling you what National Curriculum level your child has achieved in the Maths and English tests along with teacher assessment judgements and a teacher assessment level in Science. • In very exceptional circumstances the school may decide to appeal if we feel that the grade achieved is too low.
Stress and Feeling the Pressure • We do appreciate that it is a stressful time for children (and their parents!) • Try to remain positive – a positive mental attitude is a powerful tool • Don’t push the children to do too much more than what is set for homework • Have some sort of incentive for the child once the SATs are over
SATs Party • Friday afternoon party (18th May) • Parents will be asked to contribute an item of food and drink for the party • A list will be sent home in advance to let you know what to provide.
In School After SATs • What happens: • Residential -walking in the Brecon Beacons? • School Production • Sports Day and other sporting activities • Induction day(s) at their secondary school • Activities provided by Willink School • Projects specifically designed for Year 6to investigate
Any questions? • Please feel free to ask any questions now or speak to me later.
