Online Advertising (Digital Space) • Defined as any paid form of non-personal communication about an organization, product, service or idea by an identified and accountable sponsor. • Any type of advertising that reaches the consumer during their time spent in digital space. • It’s focused on communicating messages to consumers that are engaged and immersed in online activities, especially via the Internet or the Worldwide Web.

Online Advertising - History • Many credit the beginning of online advertising to Benjamin Franklin, as he created the classified advertising section of the newspaper in the 1700s. • 1800s – Advertising Agencies began to emerge in America. • 1920s – Radio Advertising enter the landscape. • 1940s – Television Advertising was born.

  4. Online Advertising - History • 1978 – The 1st Email Marketing message was sent by Gary Thuerk. We call it SPAM today. • 1994 – Tim O’Reilly (Publisher of Internet Texts) petitioned the US Government, under the 1st Amendment, to allow online advertising. • This allowed Andrew Ranker’s new created concept called Banner Ads to flourish. HotWired.com was the 1st website to run a banner ad (1994).

  5. Online Advertising - History • Yahoo! is credited for establishing the keyword targeted marketing technique called Search Engine Marketing. • Google followed soon after with Page Ranking and Google Ads.
