  1. ELEMENTS OF ART • LINE • COLOR • VALUE • TEXTURE • SHAPE (2D) • FORM (3D) • VALUE • SPACE

  2. ELEMENTS OF ARTLINE • Line – the path of a moving point • Physical Properties of Line: • Direction • vertical • Horizontal • Diagonal • Type • Curved • Straight • Thick • Thin

  3. ELEMENTS OF ARTLINE • Emotional Qualities of Line: • Functional • Outline • Expressive • Calligraphy • Sketching • Vertical = formal, balanced • Horizontal = calm (like the horizon) • Spiral = suggests infinity • Curved = graceful • Angular or zigzag = energy, excitement • Diagonal = tension, movement, action • Parallel = speed

  4. EXAMPLES OF QUALITY AND DIRECTION OF LINE

  5. Sketchbook • ½ page for each element • Element & Definition • Find 2 ex. of the element and explain why • Draw an example of the element • Shape 1 ex geometric & 1 ex. organic • Color 1 ex primary 1 ex secondary • Texture- Draw implied and glue in actual • Space- 1 ex. pos/neg 1 ex. perspective

  6. Element of ArtSHAPE • SHAPE- an area clearly set off by one or more of the other elements of art. • Shapes are two dimensions (2D) • Length • Width • All shapes belong to two groups: • Geometric • Square, circle, triangle, rectangle and oval • Organic-freeform • Clouds, pebbles, etc.

  7. Elements of ArtFORM • FORM- an object with three dimensions. • Forms have three dimensions • Length • Width • Depth • Forms are found in • Sculpture • architecture

  8. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • HUE • The name of a color • Rose • Violet • Turquoise • Etc.

  9. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • PRIMARY COLORS • A color that cannot be separated into any other colors • They make all other colors when mixed • RED • BLUE • YELLOW

  10. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • SECONDARY COLOR • Colors mixed with two primary colors • Orange • Green • Purple

  11. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • TERTIARY COLORS • Colors mixed with one primary and one secondary color. • Names always start with primary color first • Red-orange • Red-purple • Blue-purple • Blue-green • Yellow-green • Yellow-orange

  12. COLOR WHEEL The color wheel is a means of organizing colors in the spectrum http://www.rst2.edu/masters/sget621Design/designnotes/colorcomponents.htm

  13. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • ANALAGOUS COLORS • Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. • Red/orange/yellow • Orange/yellow/green • Blue/purple/red • Etc. http://www.tisd.org/courses/workingonline/greatgraphics/gg1_color.htm

  14. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • MONOCHROMATIC COLORS • Different tints/shades of one color • The complete range of value of one color from light to dark • Pink/red/burgundy • Sky blue/blue/indigo • Sea foam green/green/hunter green • Etc. MONOCHROMATIC PAINTING http://filebox.vt.edu/users/laparke1/edweb/project/activity.htm http://iit.bloomu.edu/vthc/Design/monochromatic.htm

  15. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • COMPLIMENTARY COLORS • Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel • When placed together, these colors have a lot of energy • When mixed together these colors dull each other and make a brownish color. • Orange/blue • Green/red • Yellow/purple • Etc. http://www.illustratedinteriors.com/design.html

  16. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • WARM COLORS • These colors usually “pop” out at you • Give a feeling of warmth, sunshine, etc. • Red • Yellow • Orange • Colors in between the three above http://keep3.sjfc.edu/students/emk5649/e-port/vpa/color.htm

  17. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • COOL COLORS • These colors usually recede into the distance • Give a feeling of cool, damp, etc. • Blue • Green • purple http://brebru.com/art/coolcolors.html

  18. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • NEUTRAL COLORS • Black • White • Gray • Brown • Tan/beige http://colorlab.webespacios.com/neutralcolors.php

  19. ELEMENTS OF ARTCOLOR • TINT • Adding white to a color to create lighter values of that color • Red/pink • Etc. • SHADE • Adding black to a color to create darker values of that color • Red/burgundy • Etc.

  20. ELEMENTS OF ARTTEXTURE • TEXTURE • The look and /or feel of a surface • PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS • ACTUAL TEXTURE • Using materials to create real texture • a collage, etc • IMPLIED TEXTURE • Using materials to look three-dimensional but really flat to the touch • INVENTED TEXTURE • Apply materials to give an impression of real texture • Van Gogh, sawdust, etc

  21. ELEMENTS OF ARTTEXTURE • REASONS FOR USING TEXTURE • Relief or emphasis is offered • Value is changed • Variety will enliven the composition • Texture is different from pattern in that it is not always repeated, but patterns create texture • Example is the background of this slide

  22. ELEMENTS OF ARTTEXTURE • LOOK AT THE PATTERN THAT CREATES A TEXTURE ON THE SLIDE

  23. ELEMENTS OF ARTTEXTURE • LOOK AT THE PATTERN THAT CREATES A TEXTURE ON THE SLIDE

  24. ELEMENTS OF ARTTEXTURE • LOOK AT THE PATTERN THAT CREATES A TEXTURE ON THE SLIDE

  25. ELEMENTS OF ARTTEXTURE • LOOK AT THE PATTERN THAT CREATES A TEXTURE ON THE SLIDE

  26. Elements of ArtSPACE • SPACE- distance between, around, above, below and within things. • POSITIVE SPACE • The forms or shapes • NEGATIVE SPACE • The empty space around, between, etc the shapes/forms

  27. Elements of ArtSPACE • SPACE is also the illusion of depth known as PERSPECTIVE. • Perspective space is divided into three parts • FOREGROUND • The front of the picture • BACKGROUND • The “setting” of the picture • MIDDLE GROUND • Space between the foreground and the background

  28. Elements of ArtSPACE • One point perspective • Parallel lines come together at a single vanishing point • Two point perspective • Two sets of parallel lines come together at separate vanishing points

  29. Elements of ArtVALUE • Value • The lightness or darkness of a color • Work with high value contrast makes them easier to see. • How three dimensional shapes are made on two dimensional works

  30. Elements of ArtINTENSITY • The purity of a hue • The brightness or dullness of a color • Adding the complimentary color will dull a hue • Ex. • Add orange to dull blue • Add green to dull red
