  1. How has new media changed the way we communicate? An examination of a popular cell phone application called Snapchat Maya Kirby

  2. What is communication? • According to our textbook, communication can take place just between two people, or among a few people, or maybe even within one person who is talking to himself. • Interpersonal communication “involves the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two or more people.” • Interpersonal communication can lead to something called interpersonal relationships which are “created, maintained or destroyed through communication dynamics between individuals.” (Enhancing Personal and Communication Effectiveness) • Basically the way that we communicate or interact with other people has a direct effect on our relationships with them.

  3. Role of new media on communication • New media has a tremendous impact on our everyday lives. • How many people here check their cell phones or social media sites at least once every hour? • Social media has opened up new platforms for easy and fast communication. However with 93% of communication being based on body language, social media can also cause problems with communicating. • Here are some of the differences in communication due to new media highlighted by socialmediatoday.com: • We write for a larger audience • We’re more concise • We have to discern between textspeakand proper grammar • We often overshare

  4. Focus on snapchat • How many people here are familiar with Snapchat? • Snapchat is a popular cell phone application that allows users to send pictures or videos to friends that can only be viewed for a specific amount of time • According to the New York Times, more than 60 million photos or messages are sent each day through Snapchat. • A lot of people say the app is so successful because our current society values the quick sharing of information, and the time limit for viewing Snapchat photos makes it more appealing than traditional photo sharing applications.

  5. How has snapchat influenced communication? • Snapchat allows users to have a conversation through photos that fade after a maximum of ten seconds. • This allows users to be more relaxed with what they are sending since there is no threat of it being stored forever which can happen on other social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. • It is also a new take on photography, since originally the beauty of a photograph was that it could capture a moment forever. • “ It has redefined how we consider photography in a very small space of time, using the images as a form of communication as opposed to an art form” (McQuillan)
