CGA Purpose • Prevent and reduce damages to our • underground infrastructure by: • Fostering a sense of shared responsibility • Supporting research/development/new technologies • Developing and conducting public • awareness and education programs • Identifying and disseminating • stakeholder “Best Practices” • Serving as a clearinghouse and repository for: • Damage data collection • Analysis and Dissemination

  13. WHO WE ARE Common Ground Iowa (CGI) is a regional partner of the Common Ground Alliance (CGA). The CGI's purpose is to promote public safety through damage prevention and shared responsibility, while utilizing the CGA’s “Best Practices” for advancing underground utility safety across Iowa. The CGI is a not-for-profit organization, 501(c)(3) status and organized in 2008.

  15. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the CGI: “To promote public safety through damage prevention and shared responsibility, while utilizing the Common Ground Alliance’s “Best Practices” for advancing underground utility safety across the State of Iowa”.

  18. BEST PRACTICES Common Ground Iowa (CGI) strongly supports and recommends the national CGA “Best Practices”. This collection of “Best Practices” is intended to be shared among stakeholders involved with, and dependent upon the safe and reliable operation, maintenance, construction, and protection of all underground facilities.

  19. BEST PRACTICES The CGA “Best Practices” contain validated experiences gained that can be further examined and evaluated for possible consideration and incorporation into state and private stakeholder underground facility damage prevention programs.

BEST PRACTICES The CGA’s “Best Practices” are divided into eight (8) chapters: • Planning and Design Best Practices • One Call Center Best Practices • Location and Marking Best Practices • Excavation Best Practices • Mapping Best Practices • Compliance Best Practices • Public Education Best Practices • Reporting and Evaluation Best Practices

BEST PRACTICES There are approximately 125 “Best Practices” in the CGA’s 7.0 issue…. • Excavators – 34 recommended practices • Operators and Locators – 29 recommended practices • One Call Centers – 33 recommended practices • Planning and Design – 17 recommended practices • Enforcement/Public Awareness/Reporting/Evaluation Make the remainder of the recommended practices
