Veterans Affairs Orientation

The VA Process and Expectations

not a student at nc state yet
Not a student at NC State yet?

This orientation is made for students that have already been accepted into NC State and now need to know how to begin using GI Bill benefits. If you have not yet been accepted into NC State, please visit the link on our website entitled “Thinking about coming to NC State” for a potential student checklist and information about how to get started

enrollment process
Enrollment Process

Your enrollment with the VA office at NC State University is dependent on the Chapter of benefits that you will be using

The next few slides display what items are required for enrollment for each Chapter of benefit

Reminder: Since VA only pays benefits for students enrolled in degree seeking programs, acceptance into the University must occur first

VA Expectations
  • VA sends payments
    • For Chapter 30, 35, 1607 and 1606 this is in the form of a monthly stipend
    • Chapter 30, 1606 and 1607 must call VA at 1-888-442-4551 or log into WAVE on the first of each month in order for payment to be released
    • Payment is based on training status- see VA website for current rates of payment
    • For 33, this is both the BAH and book money to the student in the form of direct deposit and tuition and fees to the school. Book money is paid at $41.67/credit hour and BAH is $1011 for a full month of enrollment. VA only pays in state tuition and fees. If you are out of state for residency, you will be required to make up the difference from in state to out of state rates. Ask about Yellow Ribbon for out of state students.
    • Time frames
    • Proration/training status
  • Cashiers Office
    • Census Day- when VA payment will arrive at the school for Chapter 33 students
payment deferment
Payment Deferment

Payments are due to the cashiers office before the start of the semester. Many students wish to have these charges deferred so that they are not required to make payment up front. In order to do this, please complete a payment agreement found on

This will defer all charges on the student account until the last day of the semester.

Impact of Schedule Changes
  • For all Chapters
    • Payment is based on training status- a reduction in hours can reduce your training time and therefore, reduce your stipend. If VA has already sent any payment at the original training status, a debt will be created on your account and you will owe the difference back to VA
    • Try not make schedule changes after the start of the semester
