  3. BED BUG HISTORY • Has always been an issue • Virtually eliminated in US • Rising numbers since 2001 • Skyrocketed in last 5 years • 2009 EPA held 1st ever Bed Bug Summit

  4. THEY’RE BACK… BUT WHY? • Increased international travel • Change in general pest control methods • Reduced available products for control • Lack of research and development • The Ultimate Hitchhikers

  12. BED BUG BASICS • Feed only on blood • Feeding lasts 3 – 12 minutes • Nocturnal • Can detect and avoid chemicals • Cryptic • Crawl up to 20 feet to feed

  13. WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT • Below ~55˚ F Development stops • Above ~99˚ F Development stops • Die at Temps > 113˚F or < 32 ˚F • (122◦ for one minute will kill) • Thrive at temps between ~68˚ F - 80˚ F

  14. LIFE CYCLE I may live up to a year without feeding I’ll molt 5 times before I become an adult! I lay between 1 and 12 eggs every day! I’ll live about 10 months and lay between 300 and 500 eggs! Starting as an egg, it takes me 30 days to become an adult!

  21. IDENTIFICATION • Not as big as you might think • 1.5 mm – 1 cm long, flat, oval, with no wings • Brown to Dark Red (Adult) • Tan (Newly Hatched)

  28. Where to Start?

  29. PENN STATE’S RESPONSE STRATEGY • Isolate students and their belongings in the room where bed bugs are suspected to be in • Contact Pest Control immediately to inspect and determine if bed bugs are present • Residence Life contacted to arrange for new housing location for residents if bed bugs detected • Clothing and bedding are treated in dryers • Pest Control to treat room over next 2 days • Mattresses are removed, to be replaced after treatment • Pest Control will return to re-inspect/re-treat in 2 weeks

  30. Treatments Within the Room • Thoroughly Vacuum • Remove bag from vacuum and seal in trash bag. • Remove all posters, pictures, and mirrors. Maintenance employee will remove light & socket covers, bolsters, bulletin boards, etc… • Treat and bag the mattress and then we will remove. • Treat room & all items.

  31. VACUUM THE CARPET • Thoroughly vacuum the carpet areas • Can occur before or after the heat treatment • Dispose of the vacuum bag

  32. STEAM TREATMENT • Pull the carpet back from baseboards • Steam along all edges at the junction of carpet and wall

  33. RESIDUAL APPLICATION • Apply residual insecticide along junction of wall and floor • Apply Diatomaceous Earth behind all wall plates
