Goals of this Section • To this point in American History as an example of how stressful situation cause a society to react the same way. • To understand and apply how progressives attempted to use the government to change society. • To apply how too many rules as well as too few rules can hinder a society.

  3. 1. Protecting The Social Welfare Lessen the effects of industrialization through legislation and different organizations • YMCA • Salvation Army • Florence Kelley – Illinois Factory Act of 1893

  4. 2. Promoting Moral Improvement Morality needed improvement which would lead to the improvement of the lives of the poor. • Prohibition • Women’s Christian Temperance Union • Were extremely destructive

  5. 3. Creating Economic Reform • Create a more balanced country where big business wasn’t favored as much, competition occurred, and the common person got a fair deal. • Muckraker – ex Ida M. Tarbell

Fostering Efficiency • Using scientific studies to improve productivity • Scientific Management studies – studies to see just how fast factories could produce goods. • Assembly Line – (Henry Ford) one worker does the same job during their entire shift. Jobs became faster, but more boring to workers. • LEAN

  7. Using the Government to regulate • Progressive State governments went after the Railroads as their first target industry. • Muller v. Oregon – Louis Brandeis convinced the Supreme Court that working women needed the protection of the Oregon’s laws • Created the 10 hour work day for women

  9. Women and Reform Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, women have been in the workforce. Due to bad conditions and accidents, woman began to demand change. • Triangle shirtwaist factory fire – 146 killed The reformers would come from the ranks of the newly college educated women. • Harvard’s separate women’s college • Vassar – women student college

  10. Suffrage National American Women’s Suffrage Association • Founded 1869 by Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton Purpose was to gain the right to vote for women They went about it in three ways
