  1. A new system for Assignment Hand-in through Studynet Assignments V3 Meeting University needs for on-line hand-in Streamlining the marking and feedback process Felix Power (x3097) and Brian Osborne (x8576)

  2. Session Aims • Consider why we need a new system • The role of feedback in assessment and how this can be supported by StudyNet • Consider briefly alternative methods of assessment that could be supported by an on-line system

  3. Existing Assignment System • Designed for • Distance Learning modules (25% by 2015) • Small groups • Not scalable • Could crash and take StudyNet with it ... • Only the OU have more online hand-ins • Data “trapped” in the module website • Only supports very basic traditional assessment paths

  4. The new system ... • Option to use available 2010/2011 • Becomes default in 2011/2012 • Turn on in Module configuration • Where would you like to mark? • How can StudyNet assist you with providing feedback and managing marking load?

  5. New Assignments System Infrastructure

  6. New Infrastructure • More power • Separation of functions means StudyNet should still run even if Assignment Servers crash • Allows us to have an off-line marking client

  7. Marking Schemes • Drop down box with choice of marks from those in the scheme • Standard Percentage Scheme • 1 to 100 • Limited Percentage Scheme • 48, 52, 55, etc • Postgraduate Pass Fail • Pass or Fail • Ensures consistency between markers

  8. Feedback Schemes • Two on offer • Designed by the LTI

  9. Feedback Scheme 1: Original Scheme

  10. Feedback Scheme 2: Standard LTI Scheme

  11. Feedback Schemes: Radio Buttons • Radio button choices are mapped to paragraphs of text • Edit suggested text to make • More personal • Pick out examples from student’s work • More accurate and relevant

  12. Example paragraph for Knowledge • Excellent. Your work shows comprehensive knowledge of the topic in the context of this assignment. You might want to think about relating this to other contexts to increase your grade further.

  13. Submit an Assignment 1

  14. Submit an Assignment 2

  15. Submitting an Assignment • More reflective elements added

  16. Reflection • Students are asked to reflect • When submitting an assignment • When getting marks and feedback

  17. Mark Assignment 1

  18. Mark Assignment 2

  19. Marking Allocations 1 • As a marker: • Filter allocated submissions • View all submissions • Allocations a suggestion, not proscribed • As an allocator: • Manual selection of markers • Random automatic selection

  20. Marking Allocations 2

  21. Second Marking • No changes in this initial release • Something we’d like to look at in the future

  22. Show Graph

  23. Monitoring Student Performance across modules • Under development for release this year or next • View how a particular student did in a particular skill (e.g. Use of English, Use of Maths) across all their modules to highlight weaknesses • This could be used as evidence in student CVs. Strengths (e.g. Teamwork)

  24. Offline Marking Client • Download submissions for your assignment onto a laptop/tablet pc when you are in office (may take some time) • Mark where ever you can use the laptop/tablet pc • Reconnect to network and synchronise

  25. Download zip file for Turnitin • Easy way to get all the assignment submissions in one place • Not just for Turnitin • Can choose All files or just Turnitin compatible files • Can download files for a particular marker

  26. Student Submission to Turnitin • Students can get an individual report • Lecturers can choose in the configuration if this option should be on and how they would submit – multiple / once • Tutors get the opportunity to see a list of all the student submissions including the worst score achieved and then the process the student went through to improve
